About Lancaster University

Lancaster University is a research-led UK university ranked 10th in the UK by The Complete University Guide 2027. Its 578-acre parkland campus sits in north-west England, about three miles from the historic, student-friendly city of Lancaster.

It is one of a small number of collegiate UK universities, with nine colleges that provide social spaces open to all students, including those living off campus, and a community drawn from more than 120 countries.

Lancaster itself sits between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, with theatres, cinemas, museums, independent cafes and cultural events; trains reach the Lake District in about 30 minutes, Manchester Airport in just over an hour, and London or Edinburgh in around two and a half hours.

Accommodation and facilities

Accommodation options include en-suite rooms, shared townhouses and flats, self-contained studios, and adapted rooms and family flats; new full-time undergraduates who choose Lancaster as their firm choice and apply by the deadline are guaranteed on-campus accommodation.

The £20 million sports centre includes a gym, a 25-metre pool, an 8-metre climbing wall and fitness studios, and the 24-hour library (during term-time) has bookable group rooms alongside its physical and digital resources. The campus also has cafes, bars, restaurants, a theatre, an art gallery, a student-run cinema, two supermarkets, a pharmacy, a doctor’s surgery, a post office, ATMs and a chaplaincy centre, with a 2.6-mile Woodland Walk circling the perimeter.

Sustainability

Lancaster declared a Climate Emergency in 2020 and is targeting carbon net zero across all scopes by 2035, with a wind turbine, a solar farm, biodiversity work and sustainable food partnerships. Student-led initiatives include Don’t Ditch It, Donate It, the ReStore second-hand shop and LUSU Green.
