About Queen Mary University of London, Malta Campus

Queen Mary University of London, Malta Campus is a medical school based on the island of Gozo, offering a GMC-recognised UK medical degree. As part of the Russell Group-affiliated Queen Mary University of London, students follow the same five-year curriculum as those studying in the UK and graduate with a Queen Mary degree.

Cohorts are small, with personalised mentoring throughout all five years and a student body of around 300 students drawn from 56 nationalities. The campus sits within the grounds of Gozo General Hospital in Victoria, the capital of Gozo, Malta's smaller sister island.

Students can walk to shops, cafés, supermarkets and gyms from campus, and travelling between Malta and Gozo is straightforward given how compact the islands are. Maltese and English are both national languages, and most residents speak both fluently.

The university reports a 100% Year 5 pass rate, and its graduates go on to practise medicine in the UK, Malta and Sweden.

Student life and support

The student-led association BLSA Malta runs the student union and more than 35 societies, and also helps students start their own. Pastoral, academic and wellbeing support covers counselling, study skills and occupational health.

Admissions support runs from first enquiry through visa applications and arrival, and the Student Office is the first point of contact once students are on campus.

Accommodation

Most students rent privately, mainly in Victoria within walking distance of campus, with options ranging from studio to shared apartments, some with pools or cleaning services. The university and BLSA Malta help new students find flatmates and housing.

Facilities

Facilities include lecture halls and classrooms, an Anatomy Centre where cadaveric dissection begins in Year 1, and a Clinical Skills Suite with a mannequin-based simulated hospital ward. There are also PBL rooms, a TBL suite, a library and PC labs with print and online resources, two common rooms, and a top-floor canteen with views over Gozo.

Careers

A bespoke careers programme includes a medical careers fair and talks by consultants, alongside rotations across hospital and primary care specialties. In the final year, students receive foundation training application support, as well as help with work experience, internships, volunteering, CVs, applications and interview coaching.

Most graduates go on to work in the NHS in general practice or hospital medicine, while some overseas students return home to practise.

Sustainability

The university has set a six-year target of a 30% carbon reduction against a 2018/19 baseline, with longer-term priorities that include supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
